Digital Arts honours student at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, Zico Mthethwa, is ecstatic after being selected from over 600 creatives from across the country in the national Young Creators Network competition.

Mthethwa is now among the top 15.

He says his love for animation started when he was young. Mthethwa says pursuing this dream was not easy due to financial constraints.

“When 2015 came I was like no matter what happens I am going to varsity and I was accepted to UKZN Fine Arts class. When I was accepted since it was in the same location where I stay it was like, my mom couldn’t afford for me to stay at res but she could pay for me to just enter but couldn’t pay the tuition fees.”

Mthethwa adds: “Most of the time I was actually walking from home but it was a long distance, it was an hour’s walk every day and I remember one day when I had finished signing out everything I just sat down and I was like the only money I had was like R10 and I had to make this last for a week now.”
