Ukhozi FM urges listeners to vote for favourite song of the year

Reading Time: 2 minutes

The public broadcaster’s top radio station – Ukhozi FM – has encouraged its listeners to vote for their favourite song of the year.

The station has announced its top 10 list of songs that listeners can choose as part of their ‘Ingoma Ehlukanisa Unyaka’ competition.

Last year, there was drama around the competition after a businessman took the matter to court. The song of the year announcement had to be halted.

Ukhozi FM programme manager, Zandile Tembe, has reassured the public that the long-standing campaign will be going ahead this year despite the previous challenges.

“What was important for us this year was to be cognisant of the fact that musicians had a delay in terms of releasing music because COVID-19 also hit musicians very hard, which impacted how we work as well. We put that into cognisant and gave all the artists, even those who may have released late an opportunity to give us their music on time so that listeners as well get an opportunity. So as we have our top 10 now and it has been announced what we request of our listeners as they do every year. To SMS the letter associated with the song and the artist that is on the top 10 to 33665. We’ve started until the 31st of December at 13h00,” says Tembe.

Ukhozi’s acting station manager, Sbongi Ngcobo, says it’s all systems go for the announcement of  ‘Ingoma Ehlukanisa Unyaka’ on New Year’s Eve.

“We can’t avoid what happened last year. If anything is a legal process we gave follow the legal demands that we had from the court of law. But this year we have made sure that we have addressed all those issues. And we don’t anticipate any problems this year because we are now in possession of some information that shows us that the person who was actually bringing the process against us is non-ownership of the Summer Song of the year.  There’s nothing that’s going to disturb us this year,” says Ngcobo.
