Heads of state in central Africa’s Great Lakes region will on Monday hold a crucial one-day meeting in Uganda to discuss peace and security, especially in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

The DRC is the biggest of the Great Lakes countries, will go to elections in December, and many have raised concerns about its security situation.

As the people of DRC head to elections later this year, they will be hoping that leaders of the Great Lakes region will find lasting solutions to the instability that is affecting the country.

South African High Commissioner, Lekoa Solly Mollo says keeping peace in the DRC is crucial for all Africans.

“Think of anything that Africa needs if we get the Great Lakes correct then we have Africa,” says Mollo.

This will also be DRC President Joseph Kabila’s last appearance at the meeting, of Great Lakes leaders. Kabila will be stepping down after elections, which are scheduled to take place at the end of the year.
