UCT SRC slams Fees Commission recommendations

Reading Time: < 1 minute

The SRC at the University of Cape Town has reiterated that the Fees Commission Report inhibits the poor from accessing tertiary education.

President Jacob Zuma released the report on Monday. It recommends that students be funded through a cost-sharing model of government guaranteed loans from commercial banks.

Outgoing SRC President, Sepati Tshabalala says, “The issue with tertiary education currently is that it is only accessible to the wealthy. For the poor, who then want to get into tertiary education, they must take on a NSFAS loan or bank loans. That is a matter of restricting access to students and when we said free education, we said free education for all because we want to eliminate the issue of access to education. Moreover, remove the control that the private sector already has.”
