Plans are underway to rename the University of Cape Town’s Health Sciences Library after the late Professor Bongani Mayosi.

Mayosi has been honoured for his work and academic excellence through the launch of an online bibliography containing over 400 research items attached to his name.

The renowned cardiologist committed suicide following his struggle with depression in 2018.

The health sciences faculty is now also home to a permanent visual memory of Mayosi’s legacy.

UCT’s chair of cardiology, Professor Mpiko Ntsekhe says, “There’s one that speaks to his passionate need for and belief in transformation and capacity-building and growing one’s own timber so that as institutions we transform. You have academically and excellently trained young black professionals in particular, but it was an inclusive project that allowed South Africans and continental Africans to rise to positions where they can set their own agendas.”
