UCT cancels dinner for people of colour

Reading Time: < 1 minute

A dinner planned exclusively for people of colour on Sunday at the University of Cape Town has been cancelled due to social media backlash.

The event was part of the university’s Decolonial Winter School programme.

Organisers had apparently invited people of colour to discuss issues of race in what was dubbed a ‘safe space’, with white people excluded.

Some social media users were outraged accusing the organisers of racism and segregation.

University spokesperson Elijah Moholola says only one dinner will be held on Sunday and everyone is invited.

He says, “UCT’s very clear that all events that are held on Campus or associated with the University are open to everybody. However, we are also clear that every incident that occurs where misjudgement may have occurred, presents a learning curve for students. These moments are used as moments for reflection and to learn.”
