UCDP expects to do well in polls

Reading Time: < 1 minute

The United Christian Democratic Party (UCDP) launched its manifesto in Mahikeng in the North West on Sunday.

The party, which has been marred by internal disputes, says it expects to do well in these upcoming general elections.

The disputes have led to a decline in the party’s support in the past general elections.

The UCDP ruled the Bophuthatswana Homeland for 17 years. Its mission statement stresses the importance of Christian values and non-racial democracy.

Party founder, Chief Lucas Mangope, who ruled the Bophuthatswana homeland during apartheid, is reported to be ailing.

The ninety-year-old Mangope was expelled from the presidency of the party four years ago accused by some members of being autocratic.
That left the party divided between his diehard supporters to those who favoured change.

However, the current leader Sipho Mfundisi says the party has grown in leaps and bounds, after Mangope left.

The UCDP has two seats in each of the National Assembly and the North West provincial legislature.
