KwaZulu-Natal police have warned Uber and metered taxi drivers about robberies in KwaMashu north of Durban.

Provincial police spokesperson Thembeka Mbhele says there have been a number of robberies in which criminals pretend to be clients. In some cases the robbers request to be fetched from different places such as restaurants and night clubs to KwaMashu Township.

Mbhele says when they arrive at their destinations the passengers rob the drivers of their belongings including vehicles.

He says a 41-year-old driver was dropping off a passenger at Ndlondlo road when the the client said he did not have enough money for the full fare, and would have to wait for someone to bring the money.

“While they were waiting he produced the firearm and pointed the firearm to the driver and took the cell phone. On the following day just after 11PM another 24-year-old driver was contacted to pick up the passenger from Phoenix to J section in KwaMashu, the suspects produce the firearm,  they took cash as well as cell phone,” says Mbhele.
