Two suspects have been killed and five others arrested during a shootout with police in Benoni, east of Johannesburg.

The incident happened on Sunday morning following a botched business robbery.

The shootout occurred when police approached the suspects after an intelligence-driven operation.

Officers also recovered four firearms allegedly used by the suspects.

“The team kept [a] close observation and intercepted two cars in Brentwood Park Benoni. A white Mercedes Benz with four occupants and Silver Grey Polo Vivo with three occupants. Upon seeing the police, suspects started shooting at the police and a shootout ensued,” says Gauteng Police Spokesperson,  Mavela Masondo.

“Two of the suspects were fatally wounded while five suspects were cornered and arrested. Police recovered four firearms belonging to the suspects,” explains Masondo.
