Two suspects in cannibalism case denied bail in KZN

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Two of the four suspects arrested for cannibalism were on Thursday denied bail by the Estcourt Magistrate’s Court in northern KwaZulu-Natal. The other two had abandoned bail.

Nino Mbatha, Lungisani Magubane, Sithembiso Sithole and Khayelihle Lula stood motionless in the dock. They are facing murder and conspiracy to commit murder charges.

It’s alleged the men killed humans before eating their flesh.

Initially seven were arrested but three were released due to lack of evidence.

Two applied for bail on Thursday while the other two had earlier abandoned it. But the magistrate refused to grant them bail.

The court says the reasons it will not grant the men bail is because they are a flight risk and that the community has not healed from the incident.

The victim’s families welcomed the court decision.
