Two Hawks members to appear in court for travel claim fraud

Two recently promoted sergeants at the Hawks’ Serious Corruption Offences unit in Pretoria and Ivory Park are expected to appear in the Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court on Friday.

They were arrested on Thursday during a sting operation in Ivory Park for travel claim fraud.

It is alleged that the detectives created fictitious accommodation invoices when travelling for inter-provincial investigations between 2015 and 2018 and submitted them at their police station’s finance office for capturing purposes.

Hawks Gauteng Spokesperson Ndivhuwo Mulamo says more arrests are imminent.

“We conducted a sting operation in search of five suspects alleged to have committed fraud between 2015 and 2018. It is alleged that the suspects allegedly created fraudulent accommodation invoices during the inter-provincial travel for investigation purposes. We traced suspects and successfully arrested two male sergeants in Ivory Park and charged them. They are expected to appear in the Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court on Friday and outstanding suspects are sought.”

Promotion fraud

In 2020, two senior officers from the Hawks and a former colleague were arrested for alleged involvement in fraudulent promotions at the elite police unit throughout South Africa.

The three are suspected of abusing their power and authority while serving on selection panels within the organisation.

Their arrest flows from an investigation that began when irregularities were detected at the directorate’s offices in North West province but was expanded nationwide.
