South Africa has not qualified for the 2018 FIFA World Cup, but the country will be represented at a similar soccer spectacle. Two gaming fanatics will play at the FIFA World Cup where the world’s 32 best players will compete for the world title.

The South African qualifying series was hosted in Johannesburg this weekend. The world’s 32 best EA Sports FIFA 18 players will face off at the pinnacle of competitive FIFA gaming.

It will be after a year-long qualification tour.

At the event, the 16 best Xbox One and 16 best PlayStation four virtual footballers on the planet will compete for the world title.

“The VS gaming festival is an environment that has been created by VS gaming for gamers alike, this particular event is focused on  the FIFA 18 tournament,  it’s for anyone who has played FIFA 18,” says VS Gaming spokesperson Wanda Mkhize.

The qualifying event in South Africa was at Monte Casino. It was held during the VS Gaming festival. The FIFA Festival Championship was the highlight of the day.

“The competition has been extremely challenging because in the FIFA community there is lot of quality players and I believe it is given the platform to succeed. I think South Africa can make a huge impact on the international stage so it has been quite challenging,” says gaming player Julio Bianchi.

Absa Premiership players also graced the event. It was an opportunity for them to use their hands and allow the legs to rest after a gruelling season.

“It’s a good thing for us to take our minds off the pitch to come and play and use our hands because most of the time we use our feet, it wasn’t my day today, I lost three-zero but I told him I want a rematch. I will see when the rematch will be,” says Mamelodi Sundowns player Oupa Manyisa.

Another Mamelodi Sundowns player Jeremy Brockie says, “Really good family atmosphere and it’s nice to be part of it, I think I am a bit nervous about playing because I haven’t played in a while but it’s all good for the games. ”

The two winners of the competition not only qualified to compete in the highest stage, they each walked away with R400 000 prize money.
