Western Cape police say they have opened two culpable homicide cases following Thursday morning’s fatal crashes where a total of nine people died on the N1.

Three children are among those who died. In the first accident, a minibus and a vehicle collided between Beaufort West and Leeu Gamka, killing six people.

In the second accident, a vehicle and a delivery truck had a head-on collision near Three Sisters, leaving another three dead.

Police spokesperson, Chris Spies, says the survivors of the Beaufort West crash sustained multiple injuries and were transported to a hospital in George for medical care.

Spies has urged all motorists to drive safely and ensure the safety of other road users, including pedestrians.

He however added that despite the grim statistics, thousands of road users continue to respect the law and obey the rules of the road.

Mbalula said crashes have claimed 111 lives in the first three weeks of December:
