The two companies linked to the deadly listeriosis outbreak are expected to explain how they plan to recall all their products from retailers when they meet with the National Consumer Commission on Monday.

On Sunday, Health Minister Aaron Motsoaledi revealed that the source of the outbreak, which has claimed the lives of 180 people in the country, has been traced to an Enterprise food production factory in Polokwane, Limpopo.

Enterprise produces ready to eat foods such as polony and viennas, which the Minister has urged the public to stop consuming in the light of the outbreak.

Another company, whose processed meat products have also been found to be contaminated is Rainbow Chicken’s Sasolburg factory in the Free State.

The Department of Trade and Industry’s Lionel October expects the two companies to present a comprehensive recall plan to the Consumer Commissionon Monday.

“The NCC and the companies concerned will then ensure that this plan is sufficient to cover this entire distribution chain, to ensure that all these products are recalled… and secondly, that notices are then issued via the media to consumers who have purchased those products that are already in the friends.”
