Residents of the Ramaphosa informal settlement in Reiger Park, east of Johannesburg, are in shock after two children burn to death and a third one was badly injured in a shack fire.
The children’s mother, who was allegedly out drinking at a shebeen when the shack caught alight, apparently committed suicide after being called to the scene.
Ekurhuleni Emergency Services spokesperson, William Ntladi says the mother’s body was found nearby after the fire was extinguished.
Ntladi says the third child sustained serious burn wounds.
“Two charred bodies of a two-year-old girl and a four-year-old girl were found under the rubble. The eight-year-old boy, who was with them at the time of the fire, sustained serious injuries. Facial burns, body burns and has been treated on scene transported to Tambo memorial hospital by ambulance for further medical care.”
