If consistency in qualifying for the tournament could translate into automatic results in the tournament Tunisia would be crowned champions in South Africa. They are the only African team to have qualified for all the tournament since 1994 without fail.
Travelling southward to South Africa, Tunisia will undoubtedly remember their historic loss to South Africa in the final of the tournament in 1996. Even though they got to win the trophy eight years later in 2004, their trip to South Africa invokes a new sense of vengeance.
Looking at their form heading into the tournament, they don’t look like a team that can stage a great competition for African championship. However, that was the same sentiments analysts shared when they travelled to South Africa 16 years ago. Their young team was at the time preparing for the Atlanta Olympic Games, but surprised all and sundry when they reached the finals of the tournament, losing to South Africa eventually.
Whether they have what it takes to achieve the same feat this time around, remains to be seen.
