This month marks tourism month and a domestic travel campaign is underway. As South Africa moves to level one of the national lockdown, there is a big push to get the tourism industry up to speed. It’s also Tourism Month, and the Department of Tourism activated its domestic travel campaign in the Eastern Cape.
The focus is on the Tsitsikamma National Park, showcasing South Africa’s natural heritage. The park has breath-taking views and lush forests.
With lockdown restrictions eased, the industry is hopeful that it will get back on its feet.
Minister of Tourism Mmamoloko Kubayi-Ngubane says, “This particular area of the Eastern Cape is filled with all the activities. Part of our campaign is to encourage South Africans to come out in their numbers to experience the beautiful landscape of our country.”
Park manager Vuyiswa Thabethe says, “Well, during the higher levels of lockdown things were very tough for us but now we are very grateful that things are back to normal. Our tourists will definitely be safe in our parks and enjoy the beauty of it.”
Adventure enthusiasts are also flocking to the area. Outdoor activities include zip-line, hiking and canoeing. All contributing handsomely to the local economy.
Eastern Cape Premier Oscar Mabuyane says, “This is a start for many here to get back on their feet so that people can feed their families. We appreciate what the department of tourism has done for the Eastern Cape we have got a beautiful province that is both coastal and has wildlife.”
The Tsitsikamma national park is also home to the world’s highest Bungee Jumping Bridge.

Kubayi-Ngubane says the sector is ready to welcome both domestic and international tourists while fully adhering to the lockdown regulations.
SA Tourism CEO Sisa Ntshona says the tourism industry is slowly picking up as most lodges across the country are fully booked on weekends.
President Cyril Ramaphosa earlier announced that from October 1, travel in and out of South Africa for business and leisure will be reopened, however with conditions.
