Athol Trollip has been removed as Nelson Mandela Bay Metro mayor.

The Democratic Alliance’s (DA) Athol Trollip has been removed as Nelson Mandela Bay Metro mayor and United Democratic Movement (UDM) councillor, Mongameli Bobani has assumed the position.

ANC Councillor Buyelwa Mofaya has been appointed the new speaker after Jonathan Lawack was ousted earlier today. Mofaya was elected in a tense meeting that saw the DA leaving the meeting. The City Manager Johann Mettler left the meeting say there’s no quorum only later to retract his comments after further legal consultation.

However, DA Eastern Cape leader Nqaba Bhanga says Trollip is still the mayor as the municipal manager had adjourned the meeting, so there was no legal sitting to remove the mayor. Watch below for more:

Trollip has survived three motions of no confidence before.
