Trollip remains positive despite no confidence vote

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Democratic Alliance (DA) mayor in the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro, Athol Trollip says his party will continue to support good service delivery regardless of the outcome of Thursday’s vote of no confidence in him.

The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) brought the motion following the DA’s rejection of land expropriation without compensation.

As punishment, the EFF vowed to remove Trollip in a move aimed at giving the metro back to the African National Congress (ANC).

However, the president of the Patriotic Alliance (PA), Gayton McKenzie,  says his party is determined to keep Trollip in his position.

Trollip says, “We believe that we have enough people to go to that council and to stave off this motion so that we can carry on with our plans of turning this city around and providing good governance and stopping corruption. There is a sense of complete outrage and disgust across the city at what the EFF were doing was actually palpable.”

“The EFF simply said that they must remove me as the mayor because we had opposed their position of expropriation without compensation. The DA believes that the provision of section 25 of the constitution is sacrosanct. The EFF has known that from the outset because Julius Malema even said when he selected to cooperate with us rather than the ANC, he picked the better of two devils,” adds Trollip.
