Nelson Mandela Bay Executive Mayor Athol Trollip has lashed out at opposition parties for the chaos that led to the indefinite adjournment of Tuesday’s special council.

The meeting was expected to debate the motion of no confidence in Trollip, Speaker Jonathan Lawack and Chief Whip Werner Senekal.

The disruptions started when Democratic Alliance (DA) councillor Nqaba Bhanga was paying his tributes to the late struggle stalwart Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, Solomon Mahlangu and Chris Hani.

Opposition parties booed him, accusing him of murder after his bodyguard was driving a car that allegedly killed two people in 2017.

Trollip says the opposition’s aim was to collapse the meeting.

“There was a clear strategy; one hand went up after the other, to make sure that the council descended into chaos. I want to commend all of my coalition parties, who all of them had to pay their tributes with some interjections and humming and disgraceful conduct in the background. For Councillor Banga, he was drowned out completely. All of them heeded Rev. Moshoe’s appeal to be exemplary, and to not disappoint and descend that into chaos.”
