Trollip appeals to opposition parties to consider budget adjustments

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Nelson Mandela Bay Mayor Athol Trollip has appealed to opposition parties in council to put aside politics and consider the 2017/2018 proposed budget adjustments.

The proposed adjustments budget was rejected by opposition parties in February, saying they were not consulted at the last council meeting.

The Democratic Alliance and its allies have a razor-thin majority in the Mandela Bay Council, which the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) is hoping to overturn with a threatened vote of no confidence in Trollip early in April.

Trollip has asked opposition parties to rather focus on service projects affected by the failure to pass the adjustment budget, such as public lighting, informal housing electrification and water leak detection projects.

“Think about the consequences; put petty politics aside; put the people of the city first and vote for the adjustment budget first. It’s not a three-year budget. It’s not even next year’s budget. It is redirecting money from this year’s budget so that money that can’t be spent effectively can be redirected to where is most needed. We are going to appeal to those political parties to accept it in the next council meeting. We are going to ask Treasury for an extension in the deadline.”
