Trial of Phoenix murder accused resumes

Reading Time: 2 minutes

The bail application of three men charged in connection with violence in the Phoenix area during the unrest in July is due to continue in the Verulam Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday.

Brothers Dylan and Ned Govender and Jeetendra Jaikissoon are being charged with murder and attempted murder after a group of Phoenix residents allegedly attacked five unarmed men as they were walking down a suburban road during the July civil unrest.

At previous appearances, emotions ran high at the court amid demands that all the accused be denied bail.

The video below is reporting on an earlier court appearance:

Defence attorney Carl van der Merwe, representing the Govender brothers, is expected to continue his cross-examination of the investigating officer, Mondlinkosi Shezi.

During the last appearance just over a week ago, Shezi was grilled about the cause of death of the victim, Mondle Majola.

Shezi earlier testified that Majola was shot in the face at almost point-blank range.

However, Van Der Merwe pointed out that a post mortem found that he died from a stab wound to the leg.

He accused Shezi of bias and trying to put pressure on the pathologist to change her finding.

Shezi has denied this.
