Trial date set for EC Education Department officials in R59 million fraud and corruption case

The trial date of the R59 million fraud and corruption case involving two Eastern Cape Education Department officials, two former officials, and a businessman has been set for 27 May 2022.

The Deputy Director of the department, Raymond Tywakadi, the IT Deputy Director, Tyrone Fourie and the other accused, including former Head of Department, Lawrence Ngonzo, are currently out on bail of R5 000 each.

NPA Spokesperson, Anelisa Ngcakani, says the charges against them stem from the 2014 financial year.

“The five accused have been charged with corruption fraud attempted, fraud, theft and contravention of the Public Finance Management Act. It is alleged that during the 2014 financial year, they flouted procurement processes and committed fraud and corruption, which amounts to R59 million.”
