Transport Minister Fikile Mbalula has warned that law enforcement officers will be tough on those that will disobey the rules of the road, particularly during the festive season.

The country recorded 1612 road fatalities during the last festive season, and 238 of those were from the Eastern Cape.

Speaking during a meeting with bus and taxi operators in East London, Mbalula said traffic officials would be visible on all strategic routes across the country and will not tolerate reckless driving .

“It is the laws that we are introducing that should be harsher. We are going to be merciless on recklessness on the roads, drink and driving. We gonna be merciless and that’s what is going to happen… to be safe is in our hands, we work with everybody to ensure that our people are safe.”
