Fifty-eight people have been arrested in and around Cape Town this weekend, mostly for drunken driving. The City’s Traffic Spokesperson Maxine Jordaan says officials arrested 8 taxi drivers in a space of only an hour.

“Cape Town traffic services arrested 43 motorists for driving under the influence of intoxicating liquor. In a roadblock held outside the Cape Town station deck, eight minibus taxi drivers were arrested whilst transporting passengers. One driver blew nearly 7 times over the legal limit. In an illegal street racing operation held in Athlone, seven suspects were arrested for reckless and negligent driving,” said Jordaan.

Meanwhile, ten illegal immigrants were arrested on the N4 outside Mbombela. They were all from Mozambique, some heading for Gauteng.

Roadblocks have been set up on major roads in the province since the start of the festive season.
