The Olympic Torch relay enters its final day in London ahead of tonight’s opening ceremony for the 2012 Games. The torch was taken to famous landmarks yesterday, after8 000people had carried it through the UK and Ireland for the past 70 days. The Olympic flame was carried to St. Paul’s Cathedral, the Tate Modern Art Gallery and Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre – on the last full day of the torch relay. It went to Downing Street before entering the grounds of Buckingham Palace. The relay culminated in a concert in Hyde Park, before it was taken to the Olympic Park for the official opening ceremony today. Meanwhile, social media networks are expected to take centre stage as a source of information during the London Games. Cape Town based global media agency, Carat, says the games will be driven by Facebook , Twitter, Google and YouTube. Head of Carat, Greg Viljoen, says this year’s event will be the first social games, ushering in an era which will see spectators engage. The SABC is the official broadcaster of the 2012 London Olympic Games locally. The public broadcaster will deliver all Olympic sporting codes on its three television channels and all radio stations. SABC 2 will broadcast the opening ceremony tonight. SABC spokesperson Kaizer Kganyago says SABC 2 has launched a show Hello London that will update scores, while the other channels will broadcast different events and highlights.
