National Police Commissioner General Khehla Sitole has warned road users to be vigilant during the festive season.

Sitole took part in a road block and vehicle checkpoint on the N8 road outside Botshabelo.

He also visited the main taxi rank in Thaba Nchu and the Botshabelo shopping mall.

Hundreds of vehicles were checked for road worthiness and licensing.

Sniffer dogs from the K9 Unit in Mangaung searched vehicles for illegal substances as well as ammunition and explosives.

The search forms part of the police’s Festive Season High Density Operation.

Sitole says the initiative is to ensure safety for residents.

“We are here to stamp the authority of the state and to make sure that criminals don’t get a chance to disrupt our communities from enjoying the festive season. We also look at the morale of our officers and interact with communities so that they can indicate their level of safety so that we can improve before the New Year.”
