Togo will be hoping to redeem themselves for their disappointing showing at the 2012 Afcon in Gabon and Equatorial Guinea. In fact, the team has failed to advance beyond the group stages of the tournament since 2002.
Their only star player, upon whom big expectations will be pinned, is former Arsenal striker, Emmanuel Adebayor. The striker had retired from national team duty following the tragic attack on the Togolese team in Angola in 2010. The attack, which subsequently saw Togo withdraw from the tournament, left three people dead and several injured. Adebayor, one of the survivors retired as a result.
He later lifted his own suspension and returned to play an influential role the team’s road to qualification.
