TMPD investigating incident where officers and suspect struck by van

The Tshwane Metro Police Department (TMPD) says it’s in the process of assigning a case, where a suspect and two Metro police officers are seen on a video being struck by a Metro police bakkie, to an internal investigator. And it will also report the incident to police watchdog IPID.

The incident has been circulating on social media showing the Metro police holding the suspect before a Tshwane Metro van struck them.

The Tshwane Metro Police says the suspect was interfering with police duties after being arrested for failure to stop. He and the two Metro police officers were taken to hospital after the crash and discharged the same day. The TMPD has confirmed that the officers seen on the video are its members.

However, the suspect was then taken to Temba Police Station and detained along with the driver and another passenger of the vehicle in which they had been travelling with.

He is facing charges of failure to comply with the instruction of a traffic officer, interfering with the duties of a traffic officer, crimen injuria and resisting arrest.
