Angry community members embark on a protest over the delivery of basic services.

As the country prepares for the upcoming Local Government Elections on November 1, many unhappy community members in different parts of the country have taken to the streets to voice their concerns over the lack of service delivery in their municipalities.

This is despite countless promises made by different political leaders reassuring better service delivery when campaigning for votes during elections.

Unemployment, housing, water and sanitation, electricity, corruption in municipalities, poorly maintained roads are just some of the reasons cited during these service delivery protests.

Residents have continued to demand better services even during the COVID-19 pandemic.

In 2018, two people died during violent service delivery protests. One died on Jakes Gerwel Drive near Mitchells Plain, in Cape Town, while another one died in Phuthaditjhaba in Qwaqwa, Free State.

In the timeline below, SABC News looks back at the service delivery issues across the country since the last Local Government Elections.
