Time to act: Ban tells world leaders

Reading Time: 2 minutes

United Nations (UN) Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has called on UN member states to recommit themselves to ensure the adoption of Sustainable Post 2015 Development Agenda succeeds.

The UN chief was addressing world leaders gathered at the UN headquarters in New York to adopt the 2030 agenda that will replace the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) agreed in 2000 in San Francisco.

“The true test of commitment of agenda 2030 will be implementation. We need action from everyone, everywhere. The 17 SDG’s are our guide. They are a to do list for people and planet, and a blueprint for success,” says Ban.

The 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) resulted from three years of brainstorming and negotiations in nearly every corner of the world.

The world leaders, including President Zuma will want to make this a success, this ahead of the General Assembly debate which will mark seventy years of UN’s existence.

“Seventy years ago, the UN rose from the ashes of war. Governments agreed on a visionary Charter dedicated to, “we the peoples”. The agenda you are adopting today advances the goals of the charter.”

The newly endorsed global developmental agenda aims to reshape the world as we know it. It seeks to build a fairer world, giving access to quality education, healthcare and eliminating poverty by 2030.

The global goals are designed to provide a roadmap for countries to finance and shape government policies over the next 15 years with targets to be monitored and reviewed using a set off global indicators to be agreed by March 2016.
