Tight security at the KZN ANC conference

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Security remains tight at the University of Zululand at Empangeni on the KwaZulu-Natal north coast where the African National Congress (ANC) is holding a consultative conference.

The gathering was changed from party provincial elective conference to a consultative forum following a late Friday decision by the Pietermaritzburg High Court to halt the conference.

Disgruntled ANC members took to court seeking the cancellation of the elective conference.

Delegates have stressed that they did come to attend a consultative conference but to elect provincial party leaders.

National party leaders such as Gwede Mantashe, Bheki Cele and Jackson Mthembu are believed to be meeting provincial party leaders behind closed doors to try find a way forward.

The disruption shows clear divisions within the party.

On Friday night the delegates disrupted the conference, and prevented ANC Chairperson Gwede Mantashe from addressing the gathering.
