Three people including a two-year-old child have been shot dead and another injured in their home in the Mpembeni area near Eskhaleni in Richards Bay on the north coast of KwaZulu-Natal.
It is alleged that the victims were shot dead before being set alight inside their house.
A fourth person managed to escape with multiple gunshot wounds.
Police spokesperson Thulani Zwane says the motive for the killing is not known at this stage and no arrests have been made.
A case of murder and attempted murder has been opened and investigations continue.
