Three parties return to Parliament with heads up

A Political analyst says the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), Inkatha Freedom Party  (IFP) and Freedom Front Plus are three political parties that will return to the sixth National Assembly with their heads up.

The Electoral Commission (IEC) final election results show the EFF moved from 25 to 44 seats, the IFP from 10 to 14 and the Freedom Front Plus from four to 10 seats in the National Assembly.

Research Chair in Electoral Democracy in Africa at University of South Africa (Unisa), Professor Kealeboga Maphunye says the further growth of the EFF depends on what the ruling party will be doing before the local government elections in 2021.

“South Africans have sent a message that there are certain parties which they are going to reward. The EFF, the FF-Plus as well as the IFP seems to be the parties that have gained much out of this. There are losers and the winners in the elections, but so far they are the big winners. In terms of the EFF obviously it is that party that is constantly eating away the support base of the ANC. And to that extend it has actually almost doubled the support that it had in parliament. But South Africans are still not trusting it to be the official opposition in the National Parliament.”
