The Correctional Services Department has confirmed that three officials have been suspended amid allegations that they assisted 16 detainees to escape from the Johannesburg Correctional Centre known as Sun City.
Two officials were arrested Thursday and appeared in court on Friday. They have since been granted bail of R5 000 each and are due to appear in court again in May.
Gauteng Regional Commissioner, Thakane Molatedi, says more suspensions and arrests are imminent.
“Following the arrests of two officials who have since been released on bail. They themselves we are also going to suspend them based on the investigations that were conducted internally. We have suspended three others and we are further going to suspend four more as of today (Friday).”
