Nedbank has confirmed that three of its staff members at its Newtown Junction Offices in Johannesburg have tested positive for coronavirus (COVID-19).
In a statement, Nedbank says as soon as they became aware of the cases they followed protocol and deep cleaned the affected areas to limit exposure to other employees.
However, some staff members at the Nedbank Junction Precinct allege that after it was confirmed that three employees had contracted the virus, no immediate action was taken by the bank, therefore endangering their lives.
The sources claim that in the same affected floor some employees were immediately advised to vacate their posts.
They also claim that one of the line managers responsible for the bank’s collections department allegedly told his staff that “he employed adults and they must take responsibility, if they are not at work they will be laid off”.
Nedbank has, however, refuted the claims saying they followed all due processes and direct contacts of the confirmed cases were advised to self-isolate.
The number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in South Africa have increased by 4 621 to 97 302. South Africa has now recorded 53 new deaths, bringing the country’s total COVID-19 related deaths to 1 930.
The Western Cape remains the province with the most confirmed cases of COVID-19, accounting for 52.9% of the country’s total, having recorded 51 441 infections. The province has also recorded the most deaths, accounting for 1 419 of total fatalities in South Africa.
A total of 1 328 608 tests have been conducted in the country so far, 34 452 of them conducted in the last 24-hour cycle.
South Africa has recorded 51 608 recoveries, which translates to a recovery rate of 53%.
Currently, the country has 45 694 active cases.
