Three men in custody for killing, dehorning three rhinos

The Skukuza periodical court in the Kruger National Park in Mpumalanga has remanded three men in custody for killing and dehorning three rhinos at the park.

The suspects are facing charges including the possession of a prohibited firearm, trespassing and intent to commit crime.

According to SanParks spokesperson, Ike Phaahla the rangers responded to the sound of gun-fire and went to investigate.

Phaahla says a rhino carcass was found and more sounds of a gun- fire were heard in a short distance where another dehorned rhino was found.

The suspects were arrested while they were attacking a third rhino. Phaahla says DNA samples will be conducted on the horns as part of the investigation.

The three suspects, Emmanuel Mdhluli, Xongani Mathebula and Walter Mhangani are expected back in court next week Monday.
