Three young boys from Theodor Herzl Primary School in Gqeberha, in the Eastern Cape, are heading to Kenya to represent South Africa at the African Schools Individual Chess Championship next weekend.

The tournament offers chess players an opportunity to accumulate points to qualify for more international events.

Their head coach, Freddy Odendaal, attributed their success to dedication and commitment.

“Personally it’s very heart-warming to give kids the opportunity, I didn’t have the opportunity and now I am giving back to them. It’s very heart-warming to me to see them grow in the sport achieve what they want to achieve,” Odendaal.
