Thousands take part in Cansa Shavathon

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Thousands of South Africans across the country took part in the Cansa Shavathon aimed at creating awareness around cancer.

Participants shave or dye their hair to raise funds. 45-year-old Rashmee Devpruth lost her father to cancer a few years ago.

A year later, the disease claimed her brother and today, she joined the hundreds who took time to support the cause.

Her hair will be used to make wigs for those receiving chemotherapy.

For her, the process was overwhelming.

“In memory of my brother who passed away a year ago and my dad as well, I lost them both to cancer. It just feels good that the hair will go towards a good cause and make some girl pretty with long hair.”

Cancer survivors and people who’ve lost loved ones to the disease flocked to malls across the country in support of the initiative.

Organisers have hailed 2018’s event a big success.

Organiser Nadia Baderoon says, “People who are suffering from cancer or undergoing chemotherapy and treatment, they don’t have a choice as to whether they lose their hair or not. So, the cancer association brought about a fund initiative where you could spray your hair different colours.”

Turtle doves were also released in honor of cancer victims.
