Thousands more jobs lost amid COVID-19

Statistics South Africa says 9 000 people lost their jobs in the formal sector of the economy from December 2020 to March 2021. The organisation says the on a quarter-on-quarter basis jobs lost were largely in the trade industry, which shed 40 000 jobs.

The data also shows there were no job increases in the mining and manufacturing sectors.

Total employment decreased by 552 000 year-on-year between March 2020 and March 2021.

More jobs lost due to COVID-19:

“9 000 644 people were employed and this is a quarterly decrease of 9000 and an annual decrease of 552 000. Looking at the breakdown in terms of part-time and full time 8 000 566 people were employed on full-time basis and 1 007 800 were employed on part-time base,” Stats SA’s Matlapane Masupye explains.
