Thousands have descended on Calvinia in the Northern Cape for the annual meat festival. The event in the Namaqualand town has gained popularity, with all sizes, flavours and cuts of meat accommodated.

Although billed as a meat lover’s haven, the festival has evolved to also incorporate amongst others, music shows, sheep shearing, fashion and a six kilometre race.

The area is known for its Karoo mutton, and the festival is an opportunity for farmers to advertise the lamb and sheep product.

The festival started 29 years ago to promote the sheep industry in the region and it has been popular ever-since. “Well the idea originated about 29 years ago and it was just to advertise the product, the Hantam lam as we call it from this area, it is unique to this area. We wanted to put Calvinia the town and its people on the map and the people seem to like it,” says Festival organiser Willie Esterhuyse.
