The youth has the power to change

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Young Communist League provincial secretary, Alex Mashilo, says Youth Day should be used as an opportunity to reflect and find progressive and revolutionary strategies to overcome the challenges that they are facing and that “the YCL will be with them throughout these tough times”.
Mashilo says the challenges facing young people today are quite different from those of young people back in 1976 who took to the streets of Soweto, protesting against the then education system – being forced to use Afrikaans as a medium of instruction. “Young people today are facing the challenges of unemployment, poverty, inequality and accessing education and training.” Touching on the relevance of Youth Day, Mashilo said it is a reminder to young people in South Africa that “they have the capacity to act towards changing their material conditions if they are united and well-informed.”
