The United Front for School Governing Bodies (UF4SGBs) has taken a decision to close schools in Ekurhuleni North and Gauteng districts until September 7.

In a statement, UF4SGBs says since the reopening of schools they have observed that the pandemic has gained momentum and a number of schools have been negatively impacted by COVID-19 cases that continue to increase, especially because July is the coldest month of the winter season.

“It is in that context that we have section 15 of the SASA Act 84 of 1996 which clearly states SGBs of a public school is a jurist person and has the legal capacity to sue and be sued. Most of the non-negotiables have been partially met.”

School Governing Body association is demanding for amongst other things for proper scanners and well-trained brigades, and more teachers and classrooms.

Motshekga was lax

The National Teachers’ Union (NATU) says Basic Education Minister, Angie Motshekga was lax in her detail of how the department intends to increase the number of teachers at schools, as more grades resumed learning on Monday.

Natu President Allen Thompson says as more grades are being phased in more teachers will be needed as class sizes will be reduced.

He adds that there is also bound to be a shortage of teachers as those with comorbidities have been urged to remain at home.

In the video below, Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga announces the return of Grade R, 6 and 11 learners:
