The author of a report on the Marikana incident says the police shootings of striking mineworkers were based on ‘vindictive and punitive emotions’, rather than the law.
Independent researcher, David Bruce, was speaking in Pretoria on findings by the Institute for Security Studies following the Marikana tragedy.
On August 16, 2012 – police shot dead 34 striking mineworkers.
Ten other people, including two security guards and two police officers, were also killed during the protracted wage strike at Lonmin.
Bruce says there have been several reliable statements that miners were shot while surrendering.
