Shifty September is a Heritage Month tribute to the Record music label, by way of exhibitions, documentary screenings, panel discussions and concerts to celebrate the Shifty story of musical activism in the struggle for democracy in South Africa.

Mzwakhe Mbuli, Johannes Kerkorrel, and Tony Cox are some of the artists that have their roots in Shifty Records, the anti-establishment record label that celebrates 30 years of existence this year.

But before 1994, it wasn’t an easy feat for music lovers to hear these musicians on the radio airwaves.

Nina Oosthuizen reports on the woes of censorship the record label faced in the tempestuous 1980s in South Africa.
