Preller was born in Pretoria in September 1911. He found most of his art inspiration on the African soil. He featured on one of the SABC’s documentary: The World of Alexis Preller. The footage on this story is exclusively from the SABC is from the documentary shot in 1975.

One of his paintings inspirations came from the Ndebele (Mapogga) people who lived in the Pretoria vicinity where he spent most of his time. He passed away in December 1975 from heart failure.
