The free ride ends: Gauteng’s e-tolls go live

Reading Time: < 1 minute

This year, Gauteng’s contentious e-tolling system became a reality when the gantries went live at midnight Tuesday 3 December.

President Jacob Zuma signed into law the e-tolling enabling legislation, the Transport Laws and Related Matters Amendment Bill in September. This is despite the rejection of the system by alliance partner the Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu), civil society organisations and opposition parties.

Opposition to Urban Tolling Alliance, Democratic Alliance and Freedom Front Plus launched court bids while Cosatu and Economic Freedom Fighters held protests against the system.

This is what Gauteng residents have to say about the launch of e-tolls.

Economist, Azar Jammine says an immediate economic impact on the economy from e-tolling is unlikely.

While, PricewaterhouseCoopers’ Economic Advisor, Roelof Botha is positive about e-tolling.

Furthermore, Cosatu’s Phuta’s Tseki defies e-tolling launch.
