The Nelson Mandela Centre of Memory
launced its first accurate, fully referenced and authorised record of Nelson
Mandela’s most inspiring and historically important quotations on June 27,
2011. Nelson Mandela By Himself: The
Authorised Book of Quotations comes just three weeks ahead of Nelson
Mandela Day and his 93rd birthday on July 18.
At the launch, Verne Harris, the
head of the Centre of Memory thanked everyone for their support, acknowledging
key players which allowed the book to become a reality. “Ofcourse Mandela as
these are his words…the publishers, the editors and our special advisor Kathy Katrada
who keeps us honest.”

Deputy-Secretary-General Cheryl Carolus said the authorised book of Mandela’s
quotations is long overdue and made special mention to the editors. “Thank-you
for capturing so many great moments of the man we all love.”
The project developed from the thousands of requests received every year at
the foundation from people worldwide seeking to verify statements attributed to
Mandela.
The editors spent a lot of time looking over public speeches as well as
private papers, correspondence and audio recordings made over 60 years to
ensure that the exact words of Madiba reflect the truth.
The book, which has 288 pages featuring more than 2 200
quotations, can be found at Exclusive Books retailing for R160.
