Thirteen-year-old Hlulani Baloyi will represent South Africa in a spelling bee in Kenya this week.

The grade 7 learner from Magangeni Primary School at Malamulele leaves for Kenya on Thursday. She will partner with five other pupils from other provinces.

Word-conscious, young and bright, Baloyi is ready for a battle to the finish.  The spelling bee is the first step on her ladder.

She rose above her peers and deservedly took first spot in Limpopo. She believes the global competition will open doors for her.

Her success is also attributed to teacher dedication. Baloyi and her team stand a chance of bagging R1 million worth of prizes and a university scholarship if they win.
