A 23 year old taxi driver has been shot and killed, allegedly by a motorist in Polokwane in Limpopo.

This after a scuffle broke out between taxi drivers and occupants of a car at a hitch-hiking spot in the city.

Taxi associations have been preventing people from hitch-hiking in Polokwane.

The murder suspect and other occupants of the car abandoned it and are still at large.

Police say the taxi driver was shot and killed by one of the occupants of a sedan which stopped at a hiking spot along  Bodeinstein and Church street.

Taxi patrollers are seen daily preventing motorists to pick up hitch hikers along the N1 road leading to Musina and the R71 road leading to Tzaneen.

Meanwhile, Transport MEC Makoma Makhurupetsa has condemned the incident.

In a statement she urged taxi drivers not to interfere with motorists who are giving people lifts 500 metres from taxi ranks.
